This was the 3rd championship game between the AFL champs and NFL champs. Super Bowl III is regarded as one of the greatest upsets both in American Football as well as all recorded sports.
Sports analysts and fans at the time considered the NFL clubs to be far more superior than the AFL clubs. The Colts were considered the heavy favorites with a 19.5 point edge! Baltimore had finished with a 13-1 season and had just shut out the Cleveland Browns 34-0 in the NFL Championship game. The Jets were 11-3 in the regular season and defeated the Oakland Raiders in the AFL championship 27-23. Joe Namath days before the game appeared at the Miami Touchdown Club guaranteeing a victory against the Colts.
Namath fulfilled his promise, with the Jets winning 16-7. Namath threw for 17 of 28 for 206 yards with no touchdowns, being the only quarterback to win the Super Bowl MVP without throwing a TD. It was the stout defense of the Jets that helped stave off the red hot Colts.
As well as the incredible game Matt Snell (RB) had with 121 yds. Receiving and the Jets only Touchdown. Matt Snell was clearly snubbed of MVP honors. This Super Bowl victory was the first for the AFL.
